This give just a bit more room than our original door kit. With this easy install Cowling Access door, you just have to turn the winged 1/4 turn fastener and the door opens! Holes in doubler are all installed so you just need to transfer them to your cowling and cut the opening to size. This is included with the 915 and 916 ACE cowling kit (4 of 4).

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

Place  cowl door in position where you want it to be. Trace door on top of skin include hole. Flip door over so that there is a 1/4" gap where the hinge will go and draw the hinge area as well. This becomes your cut and drill lines.  Drill the 1/4" positioning hole.

STEP 2

Cut out area marked including the 1/4" hinge area.

STEP 3

Install receptacle on doubler ring.  Be sure to get it on the correct side. Do this by countersinking the doubler ring and squeezing two rivets in place with your Parallel jaw pliers (holding the pieces firmly together before squeezing the rivets).  Install winged receptacle temporarily in your 1/4" hole and attach doubler ring with it.  Position doubler ring so it is on the inside of the cowling with even space showing on each side of the cutout you just made.  Clamp it in position and recheck it has not moved.   Using a #40 drill bit, drill and cleco all the holes.  Uncleco the doubler ring to cut the outboard radius to remove your 1/4 inch positioning hole.  Recleco sides and outboard radius so hinge half can be inserted.

STEP 4

Assemble hinge halves together.  A small squeeze on the ends of the hinge will prevent hinge pin from moving.  Center hinge half so it does not hit the ends and has space between the bulb and the cowl skin for paint.  Drill the holes in hinge half. Remove hinge half and reposition on door as below.   Drill #40 and cleco hinge to door.  Deburr all holes.  Dimple all holes down so door is smooth. (not shown)

STEP 5

Fasten door and hinge to cowling by placing free end of hinge between doubler and cowl skin.  Fasten winged stud into receptacle to hold outboard end in position.  Be sure door is centered on cowling.  Be sure hinge halves are centered on hinge halves. Be sure door is flat against doubler and even with skin.   Drill holes into second side of hinge.  Deburr all holes in skin doubler and hinge,  Dimple holes down and rivet.  Door is now installed.  You may need to file a tiny bit off the door to make it fit the opening in the cowling precisely.  Above picture shows ready for dimpling and riveting.
